10 Questions with Lee O'Day

A guy I used to work with many years ago at a radio station far, far away, described my show as "a party that everybody is invited to!" I have tried to live up to that description. The easiest way to do it was to retire from radio, (which I did in February 1998) and buy a business of my own.  Now, when I sit down behind the microphone with my CD collection of “Country Legends” and take phone requests, I am practicing my hobby.  Listeners to this weekly Saturday night party honored me as the Capital Journal’s “Best Topeka Radio Personality for 2004.”

In the words of Hank Snow… "I’ve Been Everywhere,” starting my broadcast career in 1968 in the city where I grew up, Rochester, NY.  After finally hitting a dead end a dozen years later as the hometown boy, stuck on all nights with an unlivable paycheck to raise a family, I answered an ad to “Go West” to Tou-pee-ka Kansas.  This was culture shock, but I found I really liked the slower pace, the weather, and most of all, the people.  What a great place to raise my kids.  After stints on AM stations from ’80 thru ’82, I settled down at KTPK.  This was my radio home ‘til 1998 when I retired.  After my retirement, I just couldn’t let the holiday season go by without stopping in to see Marlena and my other friends at KTPK.  That’s when the Program Director who replaced me asked if I would be interested in coming back with a Saturday night Classics request show.  He said I would fit in great because “You’re OLD and you know the old music!”

Shortly after my return, “Classic Country Saturday night” became the highest rated show on KTPK and in the entire Topeka market.  The success of the show inspired programmers to look at the Legends of Country as a full time format, perfected in what you hear 24 hours a day, seven days a week on Country Legends 106.9.  So now, echoing the words of a famous fictional Kansan, Dorothy Gayle, I am clicking my heels…happy to be back at KTPK, Country Legends 1069, knowing “There’s No Place like Home.”
